basic travel and lodging
Denver International Airport (DEN)
Boulder is served by Denver International Airport, (DEN) a major hub for United Airlines and its partners (such as Air Canada, Swiss, Lufthansa, and SAS). Alaska Airlines and Southwest have increased their network here, especially for flights to the West Coast.
Denver International Airport is very far from Denver, and even further from Boulder. Please expect to spend 50 minutes on the roads from the airport to Boulder if the traffic is smooth. Around 1995, when this new airport was completed, humorist Dave Barry quipped that it was a very nice airport, but “it would be even nicer if it were in the same state as Denver.” This being the United States, they are radically remodeling the Jeppesen airport terminal less than 30 years after its construction. Disruptions from construction have decreased over the past six months as a number of projects have been completed, but lines at security can still be long. |
to and from the airport
Eight Black is a shuttle that takes passengers from the Denver airport to any requested address in Boulder. The standard fare is $65 for one person, one way (additional reservations for more passengers going to the same address can be purchased at a lower rate). Eight Black operates on an hourly schedule. You can plan around their schedule. Reckon that it will take you 20 minutes to get from your arrival gate to the shuttle stop outside the terminal. If you need to gather luggage, add on another 20 minutes, though you might get your bags sooner. If your flight is delayed, you do have to wait for the next available shuttle.
The AB1 bus (also known as Skyride) runs between Boulder and the Denver International Airport. It is a comfortable coach and costs $10 each way. You may pay with cash ($10, $5, $1 bills, no change returned) or you may prefer to download the MyRide app and pay on your smart phone. Although the AB1 has two stops right next to the CU Boulder campus, it does not go near the Hilton; that is why we recommend Eight Black. Taxis are also lined up and ready at the airport, but in Boulder, you’ll need to call for one. Ridesharing services such as Lyft and Uber are also legal and widely available here. A taxi might run $165; Uber varies by the time of day, but $155 is typical. |
staying in Boulder
We have chosen the Hilton Garden Inn (2701 Canyon Boulevard, Boulder, CO 80302) as the hotel for visitors to the conference and festival. It is a new hotel, and the rooms are well appointed. The public space on the ground floor is inviting, and the hotel is connected to the neighboring Embassy Suites. Speakers and artists should have received a private message from Carlo Caballero, Casey Klopp, or Jessica Quah concerning a conference rate.
Though located in the newer part of downtown, the Hilton is surrounded by many restaurants and stores. Those looking to ski before or after the conference may like to know that REI and the Crystal Ski Shop are on the same block as the Hilton, in a shopping plaza abutting the hotel. If you are looking for more luxurious lodging closer to the charming old downtown area, we can recommend The Boulderado and the Saint Julien. |
